Training Teach-Back

Topics from Module 6 – Complications of Diabetes are great for the teach-back presentations. You may
choose to provide to your trainees different topics for teach-back. Alternative options are suggested
below. Make sure you bring multiple copies of each one of your selected topics.

  1. Divide the group of participants in smaller groups of three (3) to four (4)
  2.  Allow the groups to choose the topics for presentation from among those you have selected
  3. Distribute a copy of the selected activity to each member of the group
  4. Instruct the groups to review the module information and to plan how to lead the activity and
deliver content information to the other participants in the training
  5. They will lead the activity and deliver content information to the other participants as if they were
teaching patients in the diabetes education classes
  6. They will incorporate the concepts of empowerment, adult education principles, and cultural
humility into the way they deliver the information and lead the activity
  7. Trainees may use the tools, supplies and handouts you are using in the training, or they may
    supply their own materials
  8. The length of the presentations is at your discretion and should depend on the number of
participants and time. It is recommended that there be a minimum of five (5) minutes per person
for teach backs and an additional five (5) minutes for feedback for each group
  9. The ways participants may deliver the content information can include:
    • Question and Answer session
    • Group work
    • Role playing
    • Skits
    • Action Plan
    • Brainstorming
    • Flip charts/Note taking
    • Other activities…
  10. Their presentations will be evaluated using the evaluation rubrics enclosed in the evaluation
folder. Think about what additional skills or areas of competencies can be added to the
evaluation to assess the Lead Trainers you are training. You can use this information to adapt the
form provided or to develop a new evaluation form for you to use with your trainees
  11. Distribute copies of the rubric so participants are aware of the areas that will be evaluated
  12. At the end of each presentation participants will provide their comments and observations to the
presenters, highlighting the positive areas, and those points that need improvement
  13. Instruct participants on how to provide appropriate feedback. It should be respectful,
constructive, and relevant to the performance. The recipient of the feedback should understand
the purpose and meaning of the observation and avoid taking it personally
  14. Participants will have time during the second and third days for meetings and preparation
