Senior Trainer

The purpose of the DEEP™ Senior Trainer workshop is to coach the trainee on how to lead other professionals and community health workers in the dissemination and implementation of the DEEP™ program in different contexts. The Senior Trainer will train Lead Trainers, health professionals and other community health workers so they become proficient teachers on the methods of diabetes prevention and control used by DEEP™. The workshop combines the specific diabetes topics with group facilitation techniques and activities; and prepares the Senior Trainer in the evaluation of participants and the training sessions.

At the completion of the Senior Trainer workshop, participants will:

  • Understand the importance of recognizing and accepting cultural differences and integrating and addressing cultural and linguistic competencies across all diabetes topics.
  • Be able to describe the different types of diabetes and understand the basic tenets of the disease.
  • Be able to identify diabetes risk factors and strategies to prevent them.
  • Be able to describe and explain how key organs are affected by Type 2 diabetes or medications.
  • Understand the numbers related to blood glucose, lipids, blood pressures, and HbA1c targets.
  • Be able to identify the benefits of glucose monitoring, how to use it and to interpret the findings.
  • Be able to identify types of physical activity and their benefits, and how to address barriers and challenges to regular physical activity.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills to access community resources and teach how to work with a diabetes care team.

    • Modeling a TEACH BACK
    • Purpose and use of evaluation

    DAY 2

    Run through of the modules:
    • Module 1: Understanding the Human Body
    • Module 2: Understanding Risk Factors for Diabetes
    • Module 3: Monitoring Your Body
    • Module 4: Diabetes and Physical Activity
    • Module 5: Management of Diabetes through Meal Planning
    • Module 6: Complications of Diabetes

    DAY 3

    • Finish modules
    o Module 7: Learning about Medications and Medical Care
    o Module 8: Living with Diabetes: Mobilizing your Family and Friends
    • Follow-up, Reporting, Licensing, and Certification
    • Participants demonstrate their presentation and facilitation skills through group teach-back sessions
